In 1966, the Kinzua Dam was authorized under the Flood Control Acts of 1936 and 1938. The dam was built across the Allegheny River in northwestern Pennsylvania. The Kinzua Dam, which protects Pittsburgh from flooding and pollution, came at a steep price for the Seneca Nation of Indians. They lost nine communities and 10,000 acres of their Allegany Territory to the dam.
I grew up not far from where the dam was built. The area that is now underwater, was an area we often visited when I was a child.
This piece is my imagination of the view from the houses that were left and rest under the water. In my imagination it is a beautiful view and not reality.
