On October 27, 2018 a gunman entered the Tree of Life synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during a Shabbat morning service and opened fire.
Eleven people were killed and 6 were wounded making this the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the United States.
The victims ranged in age from 54 to 97 years old.
This senseless act of violence that stunned our country and our community.
The Synagogue is 10 miles from my house, in my favorite section of Pittsburgh. A neighborhood with my favorite restaurants. It is 1 block away from the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, 1 block from Chatham University and 3 blocks from Mr. Roger’s home. Squirrel Hill is literary Mr. Roger’s neighborhood.
As everyone else in Pittsburgh I was stunned and numbed. I was unable to paint or create anything.
I watch over the next several weeks as the Christian and Muslim religious leaders reached out to the Jewish leaders in Pittsburgh to offer support and stand together with them.
I saw Pittsburghers of all ages and racial backgrounds stand together against hate and give support to the Jewish community.
I saw my community come together in support and begin to heal. What I saw moved me and I realized we were a large beautiful collection of people, from a variety of backgrounds, standing together against hate. Together we made an Integrated Bouquet, beautiful in our diversity, standing against hate.
I found my voice again and went to my studio and created this painting.
